A Cozy Breakfast Nook
This space used to be an awkward, high-traffic hallway connecting the dining room to the kitchen. We tossed around a few ideas– first an office (too open!), then a craft and homework station for the boys– but the breakfast nook won out, especially since it gave us fantastic extra cabinet storage.
Alex built the custom cabinets and benches and the bench cushions were made locally.
This was a true Home In The Hemlocks collaboration between myself and Alex. He dreamt up the vision and built it out, and I picked all of the colors and delightful details. I’m excited to share it with you! twayfai
Paint Colors
This is one of my favorite color combinations in the whole house. The walls are Matchstick, the trim is India Yellow, and the window sashes are Templeton Pink.
It’s the same palette we use throughout the downstairs but used in completely different proportions– yellow takes the lead here instead of being an accent, which gives the whole space such a sunny, joyful feel.
The wall and trim color combination works so well because Matchstick and India Yellow share the same undertone family. I explain more about this in the membership. Join today!
Just Around THe Corner
The dining room is just around the corner from the breakfast nook! It’s a large room and also serves as the kids’ craft space.
A look at the dining roomThe Cabinets
Alex built the cabinets, which I know is a really unhelpful answer for a sources page.
The cabinets don’t have glass doors and instead we covered them with fabric. It was actually a pretty quick project– Alex screwed a wooden half dowel on the top and bottom on the inside of each door, and we looped fabric around it.
