When A Single Print Inspires A Space

One colorful piece of art turns into a complete room palette. This is how I use something I love as the starting point for every design decision– paint colors, furniture, accessories, all of it.

Today we’re designing around Slow Morning by Becky Boden, an artist I found on Instagram whose work is dreamy and joyful and very much my kind of thing. This one starts with a painting and ends with a cement banana. Obviously.

This article is part of the Art & How I’d Style It series– where I find art I love and show you how to let it lead a whole room.

The Art: Slow Morning

I ran across Becky’s work on Instagram and immediately fell down a rabbit hole. Her paintings are loose and colorful and full of life– the kind of work that feels like it was made by someone who notices the small details.

This piece in particular gets me. A pink French press, jam on toast, fresh flowers. I want to actually BE in that painting. This is how art should make you feel.

The colors are vivid and joyful– bold pinks, warm yellows, punchy greens, the kind of palette that makes a room feel fully alive. It’s a lot in the best possible way.

Paint Colors

The first I like to do is pull paint colors that complement the print. If it were me, I’d paint the walls Wimborne White and use one of the bolder colors on the trim– Romesco or Arsenic would be incredible.

I use Farrow & Ball for almost everything– their sample cans use real paint formula which means I can use them to paint frames, lamps, and small details all over the house. At $9 a can they’re one of my favorite design tools.

The Mood Board

I pulled the colors from the print and built a full mood board around them– furniture, accessories, paint colors, the works.

You’ll notice I gravitated toward a lot of food-related pieces and things with wavy or scalloped edges. I think it echoes the loose, free lines in Becky’s work.

And yes, there’s a cement banana. Trust me on this one. We have it and it’s such a fun piece around the house– a definite conversation starter! People always think we’ve left a banana in the wrong room. It’s the little silly goose things that make the biggest difference.
